The world of digital marketing is constantly evolving. It can be hard to keep up with the latest trends, especially if you are just starting in the field. But there are some skills that every aspiring marketer should know no matter what industry they're in or how long they've been doing it for.
In this blog post, we'll take a look at 5 skills that are non-marketing related that will help any new marketer get started on their journey to becoming an expert!
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets
In my experience, all data we gathered from our system, website platform, social media accounts, and Google Analytics are stored and organized in a Google Sheet. We also use Microsoft Excel on bigger data sets from our inventory software but all data are transferred in a collaborative Google Sheets file. To be honest I had a hard time familiarizing myself with the formulas and other features of Google Sheets. I had to allot a non-working day just to teach myself how to do pivoting, data validation, sum ifs, array formulas, and other sales-related computations and automation. Now, I'm in that sweet spot where I only need to do at least 30% manual work on my reports after extracting our monthly data and the rest are automated already. But hey, it took months before I found that automated structure for our data.
Knowing your Audience
I'm counting this as non-marketing related since this takes more than just piecing and reviewing your data. You also have to learn how to segment your data into lists or categories that will be beneficial to your campaigns. By thinking outside the box and thinking like a customer, you'll be able to understand more about your customer's experience and buyer journey.
Basic Coding Knowledge
This is an optional skill but by equipping myself with basic coding knowledge, I'm able to integrate relevant trackers myself with our landing pages such as Facebook Pixel and Google Tags. I'm thanking the teenager me for this skill who had so much fun customizing my old Friendster profile with glitter GIFs, falling heart animations, and autoplay music.
Adaptability
Keep up with changes in the digital marketing landscape as they happen so you're always ahead of the curve. Things change quickly these days such as the dreaded IOS 14 implementation among many others. It takes time and a lot of testing to get your groove on but it's worth all the trying. Read blogs from experts who cover trends in digital marketing regularly and pay attention during webinars hosted by these companies too. This will help you stay on top of the latest technologies and strategies without having to spend a lot of time searching for this information online.
Customer Service
Connecting this with point #2, Customer Service is an important backbone of any business and that can make or break your brand. Customer retention rates are skyrocketing as people grow tired of bad customer experiences online, so it's more important than ever for marketers to provide an awesome customer experience because their word spreads quickly when things go right! That's already a free earned media for your brand.
There are all kinds of skills that you can learn more to help you in your Digital Marketing journey. No matter how much you enjoy Marketing, it’s important to have a well-rounded skill set. That way, when your expertise in the field isn't enough for a certain project or task, you can rely on other skills that complement your abilities and give yourself an edge in the workplace. The mentioned five non-marketing-related skills are just some of the many that will help any new marketer get started on their journey to becoming an expert! Who knows?
